Welsh Wine Tasting Week...in the Provinces

I was in Wales for some altitude training on Snowdon, when a happy coincidence presented itself, in the form of the Welsh Wine Week. My eldest son introduced me to Red Wharf Bay Vineyard, near Anglesey. They produce wine made from imported Spanish white vines. The results are interesting indeed. Clearly lacking the heat of wines from northern Spain, the wine is crisp, herbal with citrus notes. I feel that this wine is one to watch for the future.
Staying in Wales, my eldest treated me to a Welsh Malt Whisky.

With wines, whisky and walks, what is not to like. Lechyd da!

Sex Education in the Wye Valley

With a few days left of half-term, we decided to have an adult break in the Wye Valley, staying at the Wild Hare, in Tintern. The Wild Hare have some beautiful rooms  to choose from and a very warm welcome from Kirsty, in reception. Following a full Welsh breakfast, we decided tocheck-out and  enjoy the sunny day, take the top down and driving to Symonds Yat.

Symonds Yat is a village of two halves, with the river Wye running between them.

Driving around on the east side was challenging to say the least. The small lanes were just wide enough to pass, however there was nowhere to stop, so we  crossed over, into the forest of Dean. Symond Yat rock was quite a climb in the car, but the views were fantastic.

To further my training for crossing the Pyrenes, we decided to make the steep decent to the river edge, a drop of over 500m. As we came in sight of the river path, a familiar house came into view abruptly. It was a house where one of the main characters lived, from the comedy series Sex Education.

The show is clever, because although there are modern things being used, it feels like it is set in the 1970's. The school they attend has a Greece' Rydell High feel to it, while much of the content take things a lot further than Sandy and Danny could dream.

We walked along the Wye valley, stopping to watch a kingfisher do it's thing. Kayakers were enjoying the rapids too.
